Whites are considered the most palatable of clovers to deer.I've used Ladino and dutch in a mix.Ladino is taller but if the plot is heavily grazed, the dutch do well and sustain the plot.White clovers will last 3-5 years and longer with the right conditions and maintenance. Weed control is the most important, mowing 3 times per year can prevent most weeds from setting seed. You may also consider offering a local bee keeper to put his hives on your clover plot. In addition to honey, the bees will incresease the clover seed production, improving the plot for next year.

For northern climates with the right soil conditions Kura clover is the best long term bet. More difficult to get started, but once stared is almost industructable. Test stands in Wisconsin and Minnesota have lasted over 16 years.

If your ground is damp and soil PH not quite up to 6 you may want to consider Alsike clover. Does very well in northern climates but only lasts 1-2 years.

I've had real good luck with White Dutch. It's supposedly the most shade-tolerant of perennial clovers, so it does well in logging roads or in plots close to the timberline where deer tend to feed.

Ladino clover has worked for me in Missouri. The deer like it, and it can be established by overseeding at a rate of 3lbs/acre.
