Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) using Small Burnett as a food plot source. Are whitetails drawn to it, is it a preferred food, etc.

It is in Whitetail Institute's new Extreme blend. I talked to them at the Eastern Outdoors show last Monday and they said that it tasted like watermelon. Plan on planting some this spring.

gutpile, thanks for the info. Did you mix it with anything (clover, chicory, ect)? When did you plant it? Do you mow it or what if any maintenance do you perform on it? Thanks

I had planted the WI extreme and it didnt do so well after the 1st season the only thing I saw any growth from was the small burnet so in late summer(not the recommended time) I planted an acre of small burnet and hairy vetch to see what happened. It took off very well and the deer were walking through my other plots to get to it.I am looking foward to see what spring brings and how much help it is gonna need.

I was trying to find small burnett seeds, but what I found was as expensive as the Extreme. I planted some Extreme in August and we had almost no rain. It started but never really came up. I am looking forward to this spring to see what happens.
Does anyone know where to get the small burnett that is less expensive than the Extreme?

My neighbor planted extreme on some awful, hilltop soil. No lime, just a little triple 13 and it is doing great. He sees deer quite frequently feeding on it. The only seed that has flourished has been the burnett.

The cheapest I've found is about $2/lb.
