Default IL Rut

I am headed up to Bureau county IL next week. Has the rut kicked in yet up there. I hunt in the coastal plain of VA and we are just now getting going.

I want to take some scents and want to know what exactly to bring....I'll probably bring them all.

I said this on another thread, I think, earlier, but, we are still in the 'Chase' phase. I saw a 2 1/2 year old buck, chasing a doe, this morning, on my way to work. The are pursuing does, now, but no breeding is getting done, IMO. I feel like everything is telling me that the peak of the rut is going to be around the 6-10 of November, for us. I actually like the week going into that, just as well as the actual peak of the breeding. I think your timing is good. I would try both a pre-estrous, and a peak "doe in heat" estrous scent, (interchangably) and would expect good results with either. Use a doe bleat, periodically, while on the stand. Bucks are seeking hot does, and will come in, grunting, when they think there getting close to one.
I'm sure the harvest is late, there, also. So, expect that there will still be a lot of corn in the field. At least, more than there would be usually, by this time. If you find that the corn has already been picked where you are hunting, consider yourself very lucky!
Also, if you're in the East-Central part of the County, try to go for dinner at Ripp's Tavern, in Ladd, IL, for some fried chicken. It's awesome, and the bar ain't bad either. Nice place, with casual dining. Good place to throw a few back, and eat until your gut hurts.

I'd say there is just some cruising (seeking) going on right now with still some dominance still being asserted.

Next week should be the bomb diggity.

Good luck! Let us know if you tag a good ol' corn fed bruiser. And don't forget to whack a doe, or two, while your at it!!! Your non-res either sex tag is over $400, if memory serves correctly, but your antlerless only tags are just $15. Use it and buy another one!

Are you hunting with an outfitter? If so, who?

I'm heading down to the property (Jefferson county) tomorrow. I just talked to a couple of people and they said over the last 2 days things got going. This next week should be good.

This heat is killing rutting activity, though there is some movement at dusk. The nights are getting darker and the forecast looks a bit cooler so keep our fingers crossed for things to pick back up before lock-down around the 12th-15th round here..

Is the action starting to pick back up? Looks like the overall temperatures are slowly going to drop between now and gun season....
